Interview: Oussama El Omari, RAK Free Trade Zone

With billions of dollars being invested to develop the logistics infrastructure in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, it would appear a challenge for other emirates to compete for a lucrative share of the market. However, with an apparent fondness for defeating the odds, Ras Al Khaimah has successfully marketed its RAK Free Trade Zone (RAKFTZ) to a growing community of regional and international businesses over the years, with over 7000 companies now based at the industrial complex.

Even the global recession has failed to make a dent in revenue figures, which increased by 14.5% during the second quarter of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008 – an achievement that RAKFTZ’s chief executive officer Oussama El Omari credits to a flexible business model that easily adapts to market changes.

WFZC is an annual event and is "The No. 1 Meeting Place for the World's Free Zones".

Oussama El Omari, the Ambassador of World Free Zone Convention and the Ex-CEO of RAK FTZ had been invited by the organizers as a guest speaker on the topic 'Branding Zones and Communications Strategies as Investment Enablers' to highlight the success model of the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone. Some 150 delegates who attended the convention were highly impressed with the growth of the Free Zone despite the financial crisis that hit many countries since last year and more specifically the innovative strategies that are being put in place to attract FDI in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.

RAK FTZ is in its 11th year of operation.

Why was it started?

The early goal of the RAK FTZ was to accelerate the commercial development of Ras Al Khaimah by stimulating the growth of the local economy for the benefit of the people of RAK. The objectives laid down by Sheikh Faisal [bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the chairman of the free zone] were as follows: to encourage investment by reducing red tape and legal restrictions; provide excellent customer-focused solutions; deliver simple and effective systems and procedures; and attract, retain and develop a highly qualified multicultural Emirati workforce capable of supporting the organization's goals and operations.
